Mama Day (Gloria Naylor) Miss Pink
Hands down the best book I've read. The folklore of an island mixed with the reality of daily life makes it so interesting. Naylor has a unique style that will keep you on your toes. I'm certain Mama Day will provoke interesting discussion.
What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day... (Pearl Cleage) Miss Pink
This is one of those books that makes you cry when it's over - just because you didn't want it to end. It is the story of a woman who has come home from the city, is dealing with being HIV-pos, and falls in love. Beautifully written.
Reading Lolita in Tehran (Azar Nafisi) Miss Pink
What else to come after Lolita?
I vote for this to come after Lolita. Miss Orchid 2005.10.22
Uncle Tom's Cabin (H.B. Stowe) Miss Pink
Another I need to finish.
Interesting. I've always felt a strong bias against this book (sorta ironic). A pretty good reason to challenge myself on it. An interesting counter-point after reading UTC might be James Baldwin's The Fire Next Time. Miss Orchid 2005.10.22
Or, anything by Angelou. I've always meant to read more of her work. Poet Laureate during Clinton's administration, Angelou writes both poetry and prose. Her prose works document a fascinating, challenging, and vibrant life.
Through magical realism Allende describes Chile during the time of Pinochet's coup in Chile. A beautiful, charming story. This would be a re-read for me, but it's been nearly 20 years.
Edited by Holly Morris, author of Adventure Divas. Although I've never fly-fished, I have fished, and enjoyed it. It does strike me (no pun intended!) as a very zen thing and A River Runs Through It had me entralled by subject as well as story.
